The AI revolution runs on two things most people don’t think about: water and electricity. Massive data centers consume millions of gallons of water per day for cooling and draw enough power to light entire cities. But does it have to be this way? The answer, increasingly, is no.

Alternatives That Already Exist

  • Liquid and immersion cooling: Servers submerged in non-conductive liquid dramatically reduce or eliminate the need for water-based evaporative cooling.

  • Closed-loop cooling systems: Recirculating the same coolant continuously can reduce water consumption by 80–90%.

  • Free-air cooling and cold climate siting: Data centers in cooler climates can use outside air for cooling, dramatically reducing both water and energy use.

  • On-site renewable energy: Solar, wind, and battery storage can power data centers directly, reducing dependence on fossil-fuel-heavy grids.

  • Waste heat recovery: In some European cities, data center heat is captured and used to warm nearby buildings through district heating systems.

  • More efficient AI models: Smaller, more efficient models deliver strong performance at a fraction of the energy cost of the largest frontier models.

What Communities Can Demand

  • Water-free or minimal-water cooling as a condition of approval. The technology exists. Make them use it.

  • Renewable energy commitments with specific targets and timelines, not vague pledges.

  • Public reporting on actual consumption — not just projections, but real numbers, disclosed regularly.

Don’t let anyone tell you the only way forward is the way things have always been done. There is a better way. Demand it.
